Greenlight Family Services has been providing legal guardianship services since 2003. Guardianship is legal custody that allows the caregiver to make decisions for the child in their care. It differs from adoption because the biological parents' rights are not terminated. Guardianship allows the caregiver to make legal, medical, educational, and financial decisions for the child or adult in their care.
The Young Adult Guardianship project is designed for families with children who live with a permanent disability who are transitioning to adulthood upon their 18th birthdays. CDEL representatives go into the community to assist families with completing the necessary paperwork to file for guardianship of the person. CDEL representatives also fully represent eligible clients in the guardianship process.
